Young Malaysian adults in especially their 30s who grew up embracing the different cultures Malaysia has to offer would probably be familiar with the name Ceddy Ang, who has been gracing followers and fans with his own content, showcasing his uniqueness without being too over the top, and at the same time, being appreciative of all that Malaysia has – especially when other content creators (local or international) tend to be quick to pass judgement and make comments that are uncalled for.
Ang, who is of mixed Chinese Penangite heritage on his father’s side, and Thai on his maternal side, didn’t just jump into the content creator arena straight away. Ang read law before delving into other professions including marketing and sales, and would have been a lecturer if his journey into becoming one of the most sought-after content creators in Malaysia went downhill and turned into a miserable failure.
Since Ang is always on the lookout for more opportunities, he’d eventually try out hosting for programmes, before carving a name for himself on the local front by appearing on relevant entertainment and talk shows.
The idea for ‘Selangkah’ came about as Ang wanted to try something related yet different. He’d be using his voice, just that this time, it would involve his singing voice – that goes beyond one’s speaking voice.
‘Selangkah’, by the way, can be translated to mean a step, so it’s a reflection of Ang’s step forward into something new. Surprising? You can say so? Not surprising? Well, that’s for you to decide. Oh, yes. The song’s lyrics surely contain references to being brave, learning from mistakes, picking up after a challenging moment or setback, and accepting what is and letting go of what’s not meant to be or not meant for you. You just have to remain sincere and honest in your work, not let others’ comments deter you from going forward and achieving success in a morally upright manner.
Loyal followers of Ang would know that Ang has curly hair and his personal features have been the subject on people’s lips for a while now. So of course, since looks is a very sensitive topic, he has to address it, and he does it boldly but unapologetically, all while remaining humble about it.
Despite its chirpy feeling contributing to a positive sound, ‘Selangkah’ is just good enough for a debut. For native Malay speakers and those who have an above-average grasp of the Malay language, the message of the song is simple, rather self-explanatory and conveyed with clarity. Ang credits his Bahasa Melayu fluency to exposure to friends and personalities from different backgrounds, as well as a variety of factors like upbringing and the schooling system, making him able to converse and understand Hokkien, Thai and Mandarin, apart from English.
On Ang’s Instagram page, he shared that he’s excited for this new path and everything that comes along with it and that he’ll be working on four more recordings.
As Ang quipped, nope, it has nothing to do with the ‘Selangkah’ app, introduced by the Selangor state government to make services such as health, fintech and welfare of the rakyat more accessible and seamless to the tech-savvy and those who need it the most.
Ceddy Ang goes by the handle @ceddyornot on his social media pages, where you can find him discussing everyday topics like the weather, cats, culture, and even food.
So, stay tuned for an even more musical 2026 and perhaps more entertainment and jokes from the one who’s just beginning to find his (bigger) voice in the music industry of Malaysia.
