  • The South Korean fictional film, The Sin, might be of interest to you if you are a fan of horror flicks. The plot is such that Si-Young has been picked to play the lead in an experimental art film. Alongside her university mate, they perform geometric dance routines as part of a Shamanic ceremony, as directed by the film’s director. Their world is topsy-turvy when a production team member suddenly falls off the roof, but the seemingly lifeless body begins to move, wriggles and rises like a resurrected corpse. Zombie-like, it starts attacking the other staff on the ground and transforming them into monsters. With a release date of 25 April 2024, expect to be spooked and kept at the edge of your seat. There will be English subtitles.

 

  • If drama and romance are what you fancy, consider waiting for the release of The Architecture of Love this 9 May 2024. Budding writers might even resonate with the film’s message. The synopsis: best selling writer Raia flees to New York and crashes at her best friend’s apartment, desperate to find a way out of her writer’s block, after years of not being able to write even a single sentence. Raia turns every corner of the city into her “office” trying to find a story in every person that she encounters in the streets and shops. Following a rough night, she encounters “River” a rather reserved architect from Jakarta, who also fled to New York to escape a painful past. The duo begins a secret friendship that slowly develops into more, but their relationship is a ticking time bomb. Only time will tell whether they can heal each other or end up wounding each other even more. Cast members include Putri Marino, Nicholas Saputra and Jerome Kurnia. Distributed by Antenna Entertainments, the film comes with English subtitles.

 

  • Inspired by a true story based on Taiwan’s Jin Xin building, Mystery Writers is a Mandarin horror film that will premiere on 25 May 2024. In 1984, a major fire broke out on a certain floor of the abovementioned building, suspected to have been caused by faulty wiring. The fire claimed 19 lives. Pei, who possesses psychic abilities, pairs up with Shao, a horror novelist looking for inspiration within the building. Together, they investigate several unexplained terrifying events and aim to uncover the truth behind the tragic fire. The film is distributed by GSC Movies.

 

  • With a world premiere on 7 October 2023 at the 28th Busan International Film Festival, Women From Rote Island puts a spotlight on the inhabitants from Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia. Categorised under the thriller-drama genre, the film explores the theme of women in violence and is set to be released on 13 June 2024 for audiences in Malaysia. Leaving Orpa with three daughters after her husband’s death, Orpa is left to face constant discrimination and the tradition that always treats women as second-class citizens and as victims of violence.

 

  • Set to be released on 30 May 2024, How To Make Millions before Grandma Dies is a heartwarming tale of a young man who quits his job to look after his dying grandmother and it becomes a journey of complex family relationships, sacrifices and the pursuit of happiness. This Thai film is distributed by GSC Movies.

 

  • Clinching the Panorama Audience Award at the 2022 Berlin International Film Festival as well as the Documentary Film Award at the 2022 Munich International Documentary Festival among others, Love, Deutschmarks and Death is a Turkish-German film with a runtime of 99 minutes. This particular film offers insight into the lives of Turkish immigrants living in Germany, through the use of music. Cem Kaya is director of this independent film, with a release date of 14 May 2024 set for those based in Malaysia.

 

  • Jon M. Chu of Crazy Rich Asians directorial fame is back to direct Wicked, the stage musical adaptation, which will be broken down into two parts. The 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, which helps form the basis behind the stage musical and the film. The film version premieres on 28 November 2024 in Malaysia. Cast members include Michelle Yeoh, US pop icon Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Ethan Slater and Jeff Goldblum. Here’s a synopsis: Elphaba, timid and awkward, arrives at college and meets her new roommate Galinda, the popular, bubbly and flamboyant girl. The two strike up an unlikely friendship, and Galinda guides Elphaba how to find her place and make friends. Simultaneously, Elphaba’s talent is recognized by the university’s head and she is inducted into sorcery classes, with the goal of eventually working under the wonderful Wizard of Oz. However, when Elphaba actually gets the chance to meet the wizard, her lifelong idol, she learns that he is evil and a fraudster. Elphaba’s university principal, angered by her supposed ungratefulness, broadcasts to the entire school, labelling Elphaba a “wicked witch”. In terms of music, the soundtrack albums will be released by Verve Label Groups/Republic Records, Grande and Erivo’s respective record labels.

 

  • For fans of the marmalade-loving Paddington bear, a third adventure is coming – Paddington in Peru.  This time, Paddington heads to Peru to visit his aunt with his adopted family – the Browns. Hence, the title Paddington in Peru. Julie Walters, Emily Mortimer and Hugh Bonville are among those in the cast lineup. Distributed by Sony Pictures Entertainment, get ready for the film in theatres from 5 December 2024.
