I usually don’t pay much attention to Instagram advertisements, in between watching friends’ Stories. However, in the case of a certain musician, I did the complete opposite - and even researched further. In the end, I was led to unveil the vocals of a certain Faouzia. Originally from Morocco, Faouzia shifted over to Canada from a very young age. However, notably, Faouzia still keeps her Moroccan roots strong and even makes frequent trips to her birthplace. In fact, despite moving to Canada from a very young age, she remains proud of her heritage. She has skills in playing instruments including the piano and violin.
This was the song that appeared on my Instagram account, as an advertisement. From the get-go of the portion of the music video that was shown, I was curious because not only was it filmed in Shanghai, but the Chinese character for ice also flashed. I was in for another surprise, when I switched to YouTube to complete my listening experience – because the ending of the song had lyrics in French. This song serves as a tribute to the multitude of cultures that she has been exposed to: Chinese, Moroccan, Canadian, besides (the obvious) English. As it turns out, this is her latest release, where you can definitely hear influences of Lady Gaga and Sia through her voice.
In this song, Faouzia connects to her Moroccan roots. From how she sings, the tones are predominantly Arabic. Yet, this is the same reason that hooks you (the one) in. I vote this her most powerful song, to date. Who’s with me on this song?
The modification and improvisation of a classic piano piece by the German pianist and composer Ludwig van Beethoven turned out to be a smart move because it keeps you wanting to listen to the song till the end … and maybe even on repeat. Needless to say, aspiring pianists will likely appreciate the melody more. There’s some sort of blend between her musicianship and the hats of a singer-songwriter, in this song, as Faouzia drives listeners/viewers to delve deeper into both the performance and the lyrics.
