Help! My home renovation is driving me up the wall!

Home renovation can be a daunting task and experience, especially if you’re unprepared or lacking a well formulated plan. When it comes to renovating your home, there are several aspects to consider. Therefore, it is hoped that these pointers will be of use to those refurbishing their homes.

Match your imagination with your budget
I know that for many of you, it’d be quite a challenge to do so, especially when you have a dozen of ideas in your head.  However, do your best to ensure that your budget goes hand in hand with everything that you favour.  For example, if you wish for a contemporary and minimalist feel, you can consider designs and fittings that are simple and in schemes that do not differ too much.

Spell out your die-die must-haves
If you have certain items that you can’t do without for example a cosy corner to put your legs up after a hard day’s work, list them down. If you can’t, get someone else to deliberate it with you, especially if you’re living with another or a few occupant(s).  It would also be helpful to have another pair of ears and eyes in case you miss out or overlook on certain minute details. For instance, when installing a television, it would be good to ensure that the height of the television and the couch purchased are comfortable.

Determine the use of the space that you are renovating
This may sound like a given. But, even for those of us who have experienced renovation previously, fail to give full consideration to this aspect. Firstly, you’d want to ask who will be using this particular space? Will little children frequent this space? Will it be convenient for the elderly, for example? Next thing to ask is how will the space be used? Will it be used as a room for entertainment? Will it be used as a bedroom? What if it’s a playroom? When you’ve got these two questions answered, you know that you’re almost ready to renovate the space in your home.

Try and equate space with functionality
If you wish to refurbish a small and specific area of your home, be realistic with your plans. For example, a small room may not be suitable as an entertainment and audio visual room. However, it may be a good place to place your gym or exercise balls. You wouldn’t want to make your house so crammed as this would increase the risk of injury and minimise functionality.

Have a realistic timeline
It is fundamental not to rush with the renovation. Invest time, effort and commitment to seek the best options, combinations and results.

Seek out suitable colours and textures
Always wanted a laid-back and cosy environment in your home? One of the secrets to achieving that is by hunting for the perfect combination of shades and textures. After all, these two are the main elements in determining the tone, intensity and elegance of the space. Do also bear in mind that what may work for a particular area may not work for another area. So, do give careful consideration to the variants in terms of hues, textures and shades because you wouldn’t want to end up with a post-renovation ‘Oh no! This is too bright’.
