Scottish soul-pop singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi would always come up with something soul-baring and surely relatable to his audience. In September 2025, he released his new single Something in the Heavens, in which the lyrics are synonymous with grieving someone close to you. The theme of loss is evident and also expressed with much pain.
Capaldi’s reference to nature offers listeners a sense of calm, similar to a certain song by Joni Mitchell. Usually when someone passes on, a change is surely to happen the family structure, partnership or friendship. One’s days will definitely be affected as well, and this is well-described by Capaldi himself - which is why you’re likely to put this on repeat. Not only it is soothing, it is an honest reflection of what happens when there’s a loved one who is no longer within sight.
By the end of the song, you’re left feeling hopeful and comforted, acknowledging that the departed has gone peacefully and that you just have to always have love and strong self-belief to cope and carry on with your life – regardless of the person’s absence.
Although there’s yet to be an official music video for this powerful song, there’s Capaldi’s live performance of it via the concert series Live from Abbey Road, initially created during the pandemic – with the original intention to livestream these performances. Eventually, it became a useful platform for musicians and vocalists to share their creative self and work, as it happens.
If you compare with the official visualiser provided to YouTube, you’d realise that Lewis Capaldi sounds exceptional while singing the song live, especially with the piano accompaniment and other string instruments.
As of press time, Something in the Heavens is to be part of an unannounced third album, which would also be three years since his last in 2022.
Capaldi has Tourrette’s and has had episodes of outbursts and profanity during singing and even forgetting lyrics when performing in-person/in public. However, his level of coarse language is still relatively low, compared to many other singers in the music industry. His fans appreciate his work and have been seen helping Capaldi finish his songs whenever he cannot recall the lyrics.
The McDonough brothers Connor and Riley, members of the US-based pop-rock band Before You Exit, are credited as producers and co-wrote the song with Capaldi. The McDonoughs have previously travelled with the band Fifth Harmony and the late Christina Grimmie, while on tour.
