If the band “Midnight Til Morning” rings a bell, it’s because one-quarter of the Australian-American quartet was involved in a (relationship) drama with a female contestant from a different group on the singing reality television show “Building the Band”, the July 2025 Netflix 10-episode release. Thank God, that member is now focused on the band, and “Bittersweet” is quite the breakup hit, with its infectious lyrics and vocals, reflecting current trends. One can only wonder if parts of the song were inspired by that dramatic experience. Either way, “Midnight Til Morning” has every reason to be proud.
I think the late Liam Payne of the now-defunct phenomenon “One Direction”, who was among the guest judges on the Netflix singing television series, would have been proud of the direction the band’s taking. “Bittersweet” has the melody that instantly reminds fans of good ol’ boybands of the ‘90s, yet has a certain appeal that makes the music fresh, perhaps elevated and influenced by K-Pop. Similarly, the lyrics give fans a sense of familiarity and comfort, regardless whether they’re going through a rough patch in their once-romantic journey.
“Bittersweet” tells the tale of a relationship ending, hence the lyrics pointing to the possibility of a final day. Then, the song progresses with lyrics where the band sings about living in the present, despite knowing that the reality of the relationship ending is not something you can continue pretending about. By this point, listeners are aware that the happiness experienced is fleeting.
In the later part of the song comes the aftermath and distance. The lyrics represent an ache, still lingering, especially when one is far apart, holding onto the memory of those late-night hours.
The pop-rock band consists of Shane Appell, Zach Newbould, Conor Smith, and Mason Watts. Smith and Watts are Australians from the Central Coast region of New South Wales and Toowomba, Queensland, while Appell and Newbould are based in New York and Boston, Massachusetts, the US.
Since coming in fourth in the finals of the inaugural and only season of “Building the Band”, “Midnight Til Morning” has signed to Chugg Music and has been touring North America and Australia. In January 2026, the band toured the UK, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and a second US tour.
In October 2026, the band is expected to tour UK and Europe once again, after delaying it from May and June 2026.
“Bittersweet”, written by Evan Cline, Benny Morrell and “Midnight Til Morning”, is among the many songs released in August 2026 and September 2026.
“Midnight Til Morning” performed at the British Summer Time music festival at Hyde Park in London on 28 June 2026, as well as at the Summer Sonic Festival in Japan’s Tokyo on 15 August 2026.
