Now streaming on YouTube: Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel (the musical)

The melody of You’ll Never Walk Alone from Carousel the Musical (Yes, the Liverpool Football Club’s anthem) is stuck in my head, as I’m typing this. There’s no mention as to how long the musical will be broadcasted for via YouTube. I guess while waiting for The Shows Must Go On (a separate YouTube channel) to be back again with a different set of musicals starting mid-August 2020, this will do for now.

Dubbed the best musical of the 20th century by a popular weekly magazine, Carousel is based on a Hungarian play by Ferenc Molnár, a playwright, dramatist, poet and author. While Budapest was chosen as the setting for the 1909 original, the US state of Maine was picked by Rodgers (composer) and Hammerstein (lyricist, librettist).

Exploring themes and issues like poverty and domestic abuse, the broadcast of the musical could not have come at a better time, as these remain much-debated even until today.

Running time is a little over two hours. I’d recommend at least three breaks in between.

The New York Philharmonic brings you the music – “live” from Lincoln Centre. The version was recorded in 2013.
