How did I not come across this funky musical collective earlier? Four months ago, Postmodern Jukebox posted a cover of Spice Girls’ “Say You’ll Be There”, which has a vintage feel and an infectious beat and ear-pleasing harmonies. As appropriate, they feature ex-contestants of American Idol fame like Haley Reinhart, Blake Lewis, as well as Nashville-based pop crooner Jeffrey James. Their cover of Britney Spears’ “Lucky” is also worth more than one listen and watch. Their costumes surely remind viewers (of their YouTube account/channel) of the styles and fashion then. Those who are fans of stage musicals will definitely enjoy and appreciate this cover, as this was done “Hairspray” style. Initiated by struggling jazz musician Scott Bradlee who is the pianist in Postmodern Jukebox, he is known for maintaining a low profile. However, it is also his role that makes the band come alive. Perhaps this band stands out as it is one of the rare ones to feature the piano, on top of the expected singing and dancing. Other members in this group included Ben Golder-Novick, the saxophonist, Brandee Younger, who played the harp and vocalist Emma Walker. To date, the group has featured 70 performers and often covers North America, Australia and Europe all at once, due to the extensive number of performers and instrumentalists they work with. Other notable covers include The Weeknd’s “I Can’t Feel My Face”, Olivia Rodrigo’s “Happier”, and “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus. Humbly starting out in 2011, the band’s cover of Thrift Shop (2012) by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis was the first music video to go viral. Every week, there will be new song renditions posted on their YouTube channel. So, swing to the rhythm when you have the chance.
