16 years after the release of Shrek Forever After (2010), the Shrek adventure continues… this time with the much-anticipated Shrek Not Too Far, Far Away, the seventh film related to the Shrek franchise – with the other two being spin-off films - Puss in Boots (2011) and the sequel to Puss in Boots (2022).
There has yet to be word about whether Antonio Banderas will be returning to lend his voice for one of the main characters, Puss in Boots. As part of the core lineup of voices, Eddie Murphy (the Donkey), Cameron Diaz (Fiona) and Mike Myers (Shrek) will be making their comeback, reprising their respective roles.
Eddie Murphy let it slip in an interview in June 2024 that there will be a spin-off of The Donkey.
Shrek tells the tale of a grumpy but good-hearted green ogre that calls the swamp his home. One day, his home is invaded by annoying fairy tale characters. Set out to save their home, including Shrek’s, Shrek strikes a deal with the cunning Lord Farquaad and is determined to rescue Princess Fiona to get hitched to Lord Farquaad. But as with many stories, there’s a particular twist to the story. Other than taking home the first Oscar for the best animated feature film, the very first Shrek (2001) also premiered at the Cannes Festival in France, the first animated film to vie for the Palme D’or – the highest award accorded to the director of the best feature film.
In 2020, Shrek made it to preservation. Every year, the National Film Registry, under the watch of the Library of Congress, makes their pick on films that deserve to be preserved for the significance films bring in terms of culture, history and aesthetics.
Shrek 2 was also shown at the Cannes Film Festival and turned out to be the franchise’s highest grossing film.
The latest Shrek film is set for a release date of somewhere in mid-2026.
Shrek is a fantasy comedy film that’s loosely based on William Steig’s children’s picture book, published in 1990, that goes by the same name.
