Malaysian-born Guy Sebastian is back to charm his fans with one of his most powerful ballads, The Keys. While the audio was released in August 2025, the music video was out on 7 November 2025.
Best known for his debut single Angels Brought Me Here, the 40-something revealed in an interview that his writings today are more personal than ever. Sebastian was born in Klang, Selangor to a Malaysian father of Tamil Sri Lankan descent. Sebastian’s father also has Portuguese roots. Meanwhile, Sebastian’s mother is a Hindi-speaking female, an ethnic Eurasian with Portuguese and English ancestry, raised in India. The two met while Sebastian’s father studied geology in India.
Sebastian moved to Australia by virtue of his father’s work and postings.
The music video is apt in the sense that Sebastian is seen at the keys, playing the piano to create the melody needed. Through the music video there are snapshots of a woman with him, making this song about being blessed with a partner who has been through the ups and downs. For Sebastian, his journey through Australian Idol was understandably not straightforward and so he needed someone to lean on, and perhaps, he’s trying to let listeners visualise this. But of course, this song is relatable to many in the sense that it can be applied to a variety of scenarios – not just about being a former reality television show contestant. It’s largely about honouring a loved one, the key person who has been there for you, regardless of your flaws and how vulnerable you can get. Cementing his honesty and vulnerability as a person is perhaps the choice of backdrop – plants and greenery – proof that he does not need much to boost his popularity – natural beauty is the way to go.
Those already familiar with his style of singing will know that he’d always reminds us that we’re all human after all. Sebastian surely impresses fans with his vocal range, singing both high and low (quite surprisingly) in this love song that’s full-on reflection and about honesty with not only oneself but also with others.
Songwriting wise, there’s metaphors, references about being rescued during difficult periods, and words about refinement that deliver the message not only as intended, but so that its impact will be felt for many years to come, making it a tune that’s not only relatable but timeless.
Sebastian’s The Keys is part of a full album 100 Times Around the Sun, which is also his tenth.
Sebastian wrote the song while in Los Angeles, the US.
