The saving grace to this 88-minute film is the scenery, thanks to the coastal areas and other surroundings in Queensland, Australia. The picturesque backdrops (when flying) and routes (on land) kept me watching from beginning till the end – since there was very little to keep me on the edge of my seat. The excellent camerawork/angles would help those watching get a better view from up above and perhaps appreciate what natural beauty Australia has.
Delta Goodrem takes the lead role in this film as a seaplane pilot, who is firm about her beliefs in keeping her small airline afloat. You’ll also learn that the late mother of Goodrem’s character started the business. Even so, not much is known about this figure, whom viewers only see through photo frames and the slight explanation by the female protagonist.
Strangely, with zero explanation, a larger corporate company in London, all the way in England has its own plans of dealing with the struggling community-focused airline.
As with many romantic comedies, this has scenes where romance blooms – in the unlikeliest manner, as Goodrem’s character (being the strong, independent woman she is) initially did not expect to fall for the young bloke who was on a mission to monitor the financial status of the airline.
The dialogues throughout the movie kind of made the movie slow – although some parts were funny. I surely enjoyed the flying puns and airline speak, even as someone outside the said industry.
The film only started to be faster in the middle. Ironic for a film in which different cast members repeatedly blurt out “We haven’t got all day”.
However, the messages in this movie were as clear as the sky is blue – it’s to always make an effort to give back to the community, no matter how small – and to also seek help when you need it – because at times, handling everything solo can mean too much on your plate.
If there’s any reason to watch this, for me, it was because I wanted to see Delta Goodrem in a different light, having been only exposed to some of her songs – to the English language radio stations in Malaysia that had given her songs some airplay, thank you.
Through his role, the English actor Joshua Sasse plays the love interest of Goodrem’s character.
Delta Goodrem is a Sydney-born Australian singer, pianist, songwriter, although Goodrem is also an actress and a television personality.
Adrian Powers sits in both the director’s chair as well as one of the writers for the screenplay. Others in the team responsible for the film’s screenplay are Flinders University alumni Katharine McPhee, and Caera Bradshaw, a screenwriter in Australia.
The film is streaming on Netflix.
