Who’s up for an original, new stage musical?

Well, you’re in luck.

The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC) is proud to bring you the latest work, ‘Lorong Cermin’, which is slated to have a breakthrough moment on the stage come mid-January 2026.

Employing the technique of puppetry in musical theatre, this piece of work is the final-year production of Taylor’s University and The Actors Studio (TUTAS), where its students attend both classes at the university and the 794-seat site that also hosts a different variety of workshops and classes, other than staging performances that  hold cultural significance.

Alongside TUTAS, this musical is made possible thanks to SIAPA Theatre, which stands for School of Improvisation, Acting, and Puppetry Arts (SIAPA). Their efforts and initiatives will hopefully inspire the next generation of performers, both young children and adults to be more involved in improvisation, acting, and contemporary puppetry. SIAPA has also collaborated with the Ministry of Education (MOE) or Kementerian Pelajaran Malaysia (KPM) and the Cultural Economy Development Agency (CENDANA) to bring performing arts and create sustainable performing arts ecosystems to/within B40 schools in Klang Valley.

Four years following a devastating flash flood hit a small town, ‘Lorong Cermin’ is being redeveloped. ‘Lorong Cermin’ is home to an aspiring writer Kee. However, Kee feels out of place amongst his own townspeople. Other than that, he struggles with his budding feelings for a childhood friend and having a healthy relationship with his single mother. Furthermore, with the threat of an oncoming storm, he will have to uncover the truth and any other long-kept secret.

Written by Perassath and Merah Malam, ‘Lorong Cermin’ is a story of strength, resilience, hope, forgiveness and the fragile beauty of looking for love once the waters subside. Will redemption be found and be able to rewrite the past, or will it be cleansed by rainwater?

With support and guidance by SIAPA theatre, the TUTAS graduating class has made puppets, to be featured in this captivating musical, directed by Christopher Ling. Music and lyrics are the brainchild of Joe Loy. Rehearsals will be under the watchful eye of Datuk Faridah Merican. The choreography team consists of three members, including Jocelyn Jowono and Dena Choong.

TUTAS lecturers include the Malaysian Mark Beau de Silva, and the American Christopher Higgs who has taught English in Korea in 2000, and has subsequently called Malaysia his home for both work and personal endeavours. Others in the team of lecturers include local Zhafir Muzani, best known for his acting on Oh My English!

The play, with a runtime of about 65 minutes, will be presented in Bahasa Malaysia and English, given the multilingual nature of many Malaysian-born citizens.
