Calling all Peranakans/Baba Nyonyas and non-Peranakans/non-Baba Nyonyas. If you’re looking to spice up your afternoon in January 2026, why not join the ‘Meh Belajair Masak Sama Minum Petang’ event? The fun, spicy, flavourful event is brought to you by the Persatuan Peranakan Baba Nyonya Kuala Lumpur & Selangor (PPBNKLS). Do note that the spelling in the poster/promotional material of the event is in recognition of Baba Malay, hence the slightly different spelling from Standard Malay, as found in textbooks and grammatically taught by teachers in schools and institutions.

Registration is a crucial step as this event is open to a limited number of 60 participants.

For members of the PPBNKLS, tickets are at RM50, while non-members will have to pay RM70 for the experience.

The event start time takes into consideration registration of participants. Then, it will be followed by welcome speeches.

There will be first a cooking demo by Chef Baba Michael Soon, although you do not need to have cooking experience to see and smell what’s happening during the 45-minute slot, where he’ll show you different prep and cooking techniques, depending on what’s on the menu that day.

After the demo, there’ll be a high-tea buffet, where you can have a taste of the Nyonya spread available. I’m starting to dream of all the flavours I can imagine.  Are you salivating yet?

To preserve tradition and ensure that the Peranakan/Baba Nyonya traditions are kept alive, no event should go without the Ronggeng dance and some singing (Karaoke versions). You surely don’t want to miss this, especially for those non-Peranakans (unless a non-Peranakan marries a Peranakan who is never ashamed to practice these traditions still).  who may have very little exposure to their dances and performances, especially once you’ve moved out of the Straits Settlements or other Peranakan-stronghold states to the Klang Valley.

For registration, there’s a Google form to fill in, then, pay to the relevant Maybank account number.

The event will take place at the Midtown Condo in Petaling Jaya – Seksyen 13 – Level 7, Multipurpose Hall on the 18th of January 2026, Sunday. The event will be from 2:30PM to 5:30PM.

So, for the non-Peranakans/non-Baba Nyonyas, why not take the chance to learn and mingle with the community? And to the Baba Nyonyas/Peranakans, welcome home – your culture should very much be kept alive and taught/imparted to others for all the right reasons. Always celebrate being a Peranakan and never be ashamed to admit that you’re one – even if you’re ½ , ¼, or 1/8 Peranakan.
