As with any form of life, comes death. And with death, logically, grief comes next, for someone experiencing loss. Grief is proof that we have loved a person to a certain extent.
There is a sense of vulnerability in this song, how his life experiences have helped shaped the themes in “Dark to Light”, which is part of his new album, How Did I Get Here. The tempo and sombre mood are both elements that are very telling that he’s been very candid and precise about his songwriting and song-producing. It also takes strength to express grief “Don’t go anywhere I can’t follow”, although understandably it’s been used much earlier in literature. The fact that it’s repeated thrice speaks volumes of the magnitude of the bond(s) he had, grief, loss, and the impact of the song.
Perhaps this is Louis Tomlinson’s way of expressing and channeling his true feelings, especially after losing his mum to leukemia in 2016, followed by losing his sister to an accidental case of drug overdose (in 2019). Who knew that later in 2024 his former bandmate, part of the now-defunct One Direction, would depart under tragic circumstances.
In an interview, Tomlinson, being a risk-taker said the song is partly a message for himself and a message for those who have ever felt underappreciated or taken for granted.
The album has been out since 23 January 2026.
This track is in contrast to his more upbeat “Sunflowers” (2026), “On Fire” (2026) and “Lemonade” (2025).
To date, the visualiser of the track has been made available on YouTube.
The track itself is now available on major streaming platforms, including Apple Music and Spotify.
Louis Tomlinson now has a solo career, after the breakup of the reality-TV show-created band, One Direction, following fellow bandmate’s Zayn Malik’s departure from the band. Eventually, other members had also decided to pursue other projects.
