Who would have thought that the two-year-old group Foxyrose would not only be able to fill the gap that has been in the Indonesian market for long, but also re-enter the market at a time when many industries are forced to adapt and rethink their day-to-day? Providing me with answers is a member of the group, who has been doing her part by staying put in her current home in Bekasi.
Based in Bandung, Indonesia, Foxyrose decided to do a cover of Michael Jackson’s Heal the World a few months ago. You could say it’s fitting and timely with what’s happening around the world right now. Using their smartphones, members of the group recorded their portions (from home) to make a full video of the song, originally recorded by the King of Pop for his 1991 album ‘Dangerous’.
“Fans were asking for new content since they haven’t heard from us in a long time, so that’s why we decided to come up with the cover. It’s also to send the message to our fans that they’re not alone, and hopefully, the world will heal soon. The feeling is definitely different – we miss seeing our fans at our live performances and fanmeetings.”
The girlgroup is surely looking to stand out from the rest of the girl and boygroups in Indonesia, since existing groups sing solely in Bahasa Indonesia. There are fewer than 10 active girl/boygroups before this, according to this group member.
“We get hate comments from those who do not like our music, but I guess that’s normal. I know we have a long way to go.”
After all, why limit your fanbase to one country? Furthermore, compared to say, three or four years ago, many in Indonesia could not understand the concept and significance of boy/girlgroups.
Interestingly, many popular South Korean girl and boygroups have been holding their concerts in Indonesia since 2017. Perhaps this influenced Foxyrose’s music, especially when they debuted.
“Many friends and those I know personally are into K-Pop. The scene in Indonesia is crazy! My dad said he’s tired of it. You can find K-Pop advertisements – from on the subway to billboards. Plus, many Indonesian-owned companies use K-Pop artists as their brand ambassadors.”
Of course, now, the five-member group is planning to explore other genres as well.
Today, an increasing number of television and radio stations are inviting girl/boygroups to their shows.
That is why the up-and-coming group, who went on a hiatus for roughly a year, is making a comeback this 16th September 2020 – with the release of a second single album. The group debuted in August 2018.
