Troye Sivan, the Australian singer-songwriter-actor has released “Swimming Pools” on music streaming platforms like YouTube and Spotify, as part of his 10th anniversary album “Blue Neighbourhood”. Back in 2015, the melancholic track was solely available as a bonus track on the Target exclusive edition. “Blue Neighbourhood” was released back in 2015 as Sivan’s debut album.
Now that it’s made available on streaming platforms, longtime fans can more easily access the song, provided they have a stable and strong Internet connection.
Exploring love, longing, hope, as well as freeing from emotional exhaustion and anxiety, the song employs the metaphor of water to signify a place of peace and calm, after going through obstacles, offering a space of quiet and reflection after experiencing stress and anxiety. The lighthouse imagery provides a guiding light when in the middle of confusion and disappointment, bringing clarity, even during one’s darkest moments.
Part of the reason why it’s a standout track is its confessional style, sticky electropop sound, despite being moody in nature. Besides, “Swimming Pools” fits into the broader theme of the album, making it flow well, achieving cohesion.
The song is slightly over three minutes.
Sivan, 30, was born in South Africa. At a young age, however, his parents moved to Australia due to the crime rate in the former. It was in Australia that Sivan found his voice and honed his craft. In 2006, his performance for a Perth Telethon included a duet with Guy Sebastian, the Malaysian-born Australian, who won Australian Idol during its first season in 2003. Sivan’s favourite artistes include Lorde, Amy Winehouse and Frank Ocean. He is also inspired by Cher, Madonna and Lady Gaga.
