Currently watching: A Man on the Inside (2024)

Ted Danson’s charm is once again evident throughout the episodic series, despite his age. A retired engineering university professor finds a new lease of life once he is hired as a private investigator – to spy on a possible thief, lurking around within a retirement home, filled with multiple interesting personalities.

As the story develops, viewers learn the importance of one’s family unit, and showing care and support for the aged community. Intertwined with romantic relationships, drama ensues the moment a resident of the retirement home (falsely) accuses the said private investigator of stealing one of his possessions.

Episode titles are also quite creative with one of them referencing and poking fun at a novel by Mark Haddon.

The scenes where Ted Danson’s alter ego transform into a Shakespeare lover instead of his previous engineering professor character are also worth noting and eases the viewer, especially when the series delves into many heartbreaking subjects, including death.

A Man on the Inside is based on an earlier Spanish docuseries in 2020 by Chilean director Maite Alberdi.

Beautifully showcased are the transport system of San Francisco and its attractive sights. I felt like I was on a trip to San Francisco all over again, even as I was watching the series for its main idea.

The music in the series also matches the funny yet sleuthing nature of the TV show. For that, you have David Schwartz to thank. Schwartz has previously worked on the music for other TV series including Arrested Development and 90210.

Mike Schur, who made the American version of The Office, is at the helm of this series. Ted Danson is also one of the series’ producers.

All episodes are around 30 minutes-long, with a total of eight, making it quite a fast series to finish – if you understand Netflix’s system/algorithm.

The Netflix series premiered on the app-driven video-streaming subscription-only platform on 21 November 2024.

Be right back, gonna pick up from where I left off (with the partly heartwarming, and partly comedy-type show).
