There’s always something to look forward to in the productions by the Australian Ballet. This time, the ballet company is thrilled to have livestreaming worldwide of a well-known Irish poet and playwright, Oscar Wilde, his life, and his works.
As always, the orchestra gives life to the ballet performance, transporting viewers through the different scenes – particularly switching between a waltz and then something more dramatic for the darker and much more tensed moments.
Perhaps, departing from other ballet performances and productions is how there is prolonged high-pitched noise, making it unsuitable for kids. So, if you have kids running around while watching this, do be more careful.
Another highlight is the human-like prop moon, which displays tears and then, blood, accentuating every emotion that the audience is likely to feel, while watching live, in-person at the Sydney Opera House.
I had to catch this particular work of art twice, simply because there were different details, moments and characters, which can make distinguishing what’s happening quite difficult – even with the slight bit of narration by the narrator – and the behind-the-scenes explanation.
Weaving Wilde’s life and his works remains the boldest of Christopher Wheeldon’s move, as evident in this piece of fiction for the stage. Some pre-reading of the synopsis and the cast members would help.
The two-coloured costumes are definitely worth discussing about. They definitely elevate the viewing experience – as you delve into Wilde’s flamboyant lifestyle that he led.
Along with the other cast members who gave a cute and delightful performance, the lead character acted his part well – gripping the audience through every emotion executed.
Tickets are priced at AUD29 – with the livestreaming premiere on 19 November 2024, and expected to continue until 3 December 2024.
The two-act ballet will take up more than two hours, but there’s an intermission of 25 minutes, where those watching worldwide will get an inside look into the music, orchestra, some of the prominent characters, the hair and some other details.
