Here’s why APT. by Rosé & Bruno Mars sounds so familiar

image

By now, you’re probably used to snapping fingers and bopping your head up and down and back and forth to the catchy and infectious APT. song by both Bruno Mars, the American singer-songwriter and producer as well as the Auckland-born, Melbourne-raised Rosé of South Korean descent. Thanks to social media, there are now even dance and choreography versions to match the hit, oozing with much popularity. Pretty sure that after having the song repeated multiple times, you might be wondering why it sounds so familiar. Well, you’re about to find out why:

  • The song uses an interpolation of “Hey Mickey” by Toni Basil. Remember that cheerleading-based hit? Yup, don’t worry the two much younger singers today have acknowledged using that beat in their song.

A few of Avril Lavigne’s songs also come to mind, especially:

  • “Girlfriend”(2007) and
  • “Sk8er Boi” (2002)
These two share the same category in terms of genre – pop-punk, with the former 2007 song showcasing more of Lavigne’s rockier side.

The melody of the pre-chorus is pretty common and used in many other songs including:

  • One of Your Girls by Troye Sivan, the South-African-born, Australian singer-songwriter and actor.
  • Ava Max’s So Am I

Do you ever feel like a misfit?
Everything inside you is dark and twisted
Oh, but it's okay to be different
'Cause baby, so am I (so am I, so am I, so am I)

  • The Vamps’ Can We Dance, a song co-written by Bruno Mars. This was the first song I thought of the moment I had a first listen of “Don’t you want me like I want you, baby
Don’t you need me like I need you now”.

Don't mind all my friends, I know they're all crazy,

But they're the only friends that I have.

  • Night Changes by the-then One Direction

We’re only getting older baby,

And I’ve been thinking about it lately

Does it ever drive you crazy

Everything that you’ve ever dreamed of

Disappearing when you wake up

But there’s nothing to be afraid of

Even when the night changes

Now you know (the game), to quote Rosé.

Until the next post, happy listening and dancing!
