Ingrid Michaelson has come a long way since “The Way I Am”, her 2006 iconic hit single featuring the clown-like actors and atmosphere in the related music video. Nevertheless, fans of Michaelson will be happy to know that she has not lost her voice, creativity and upbeat nature, needed for her latest release “Funny”.

At first glance, it’s easy to conclude that the song is about a past relationship. One minute, your partner can mean your entire world, and partake in everything you do, the next, who knows? He can become a total stranger, for something he could have said or done. How ironic and absurd. The song ends with the rather realistic, mildly cynical observation of running into an ex with a new partner, exchanging polite smiles, and saying “let’s get together soon”, although both parties know that they’re just making empty promises and an empty pleasantry and nothing of significance.

However, Michaelson herself also said that the song is about outgrowing previous versions of yourself and allowing a newer, hopefully, better version of yourself to take shape and form.

The song has a similar runtime of two minutes plus, as her previous “The Way I Am”.

Via the music video, you can see Michaelson herself, dressed in black, removing her lipstick, symbolic of dark times, and moving on.

The song was written by Michaelson herself and Eric Leva, and produced by Rob Moose.

This new release, up on YouTube and major streaming platforms, precedes her “Cozy Fall Trio Tour” set to kick off in the second week of October 2026.
