Malaysia’s Douglas Lim now standing in the eyes of the world with latest Facebook update, meant to capture more viewers to catch his ‘Made in Malaysia’ YouTube comedy special

Outstanding. That’s how I’d describe Douglas Lim’s latest Facebook video update, in which he puts his own spin on a popular and uplifting song, used to motivate many, to attract more to watch his ‘Made in Malaysia’ comedy special, now up on YouTube.

In the two-minute update, he thoughtfully borrows Standing in the Eyes of the World by Ella, the Queen of Rock. David Gates and Wah Idris collaborated to craft a version for the 1998 Commonwealth Games, meant to cement athletes’ aspirations and remind them of their capabilities. Gates has also separately recorded a version that is fully in English.

Now, with Douglas Lim, best known for his stand-up comedy, surely he has to put his own spin on it and relate it to the world of comedy in Malaysia as well as the local entertainment scene, in general. Well, guess what? It’s actually well-planned, comical, yet honest.

Like the journey of many others, Lim’s journey hasn't always been a bed of roses. The lyrics along with the shots/montages beautifully, powerfully and honestly captured all of that. Not forgetting his facial expressions and gestures that add to the oomph.

Douglas Lim trained to be an English teacher, but later stepped into the worlds of television and film, before going into stand-up comedy. Supported by his strengths in the English and Malay languages, he is also a composer and singer-songwriter. He has also briefly worked in radio. His YouTube channel became his outlet of expression, prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic which kept many under the Movement Control Order, limiting in-person meetings and events, making shows with a live audience a challenge to have. His videos have been mainly on social commentary on current issues. However, he has also posted his songs and jokes about the everyday that would primarily attract the Malaysian audience, but also have a certain international appeal. Lim can also speak Cantonese, making it easier to pull in both the young and the old.

His ‘Made in Malaysia’ comedy special was held in front of a live audience at the prestigious Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP) or Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) in 2024.

The YouTube video version contains an introduction, with funny captions.

The YouTube video, which can be found through his YouTube channel, was streamed on 14 December 2025, and has been available since.
