As per the last few updates by Mekyun, as a loyal follower, you would have noticed that she has been voluntarily participating in Ramadan by fasting since she is of a different faith.  Going a step further, she even revealed that there’s a Malaysian of Chinese background/ethnicity who had asked her out for dinner. During their drive, during which they were getting to know each other, Mekyun burst out laughing – in response to his question about whether she has ever gone out with an ethnic Chinese male, following an earlier one about her proficiency in Mandarin. Notably, like Mekyun’s date and Mekyun herself, there’s a significant number of ethnic Chinese who can’t/prefer not to function in Mandarin, but they’re usually conversant in a tongue like Hokkien, Cantonese, Hainanese, or Hakka. A small minority of ethnic Chinese were not taught their mother tongue(s) at home, so they can only function in Malay and/or English, unless they have been exposed to other languages like Iban or Tamil through mixing with neighbours or they’ve someone they know who speaks that particular language in Malaysia. Anyway, Mekyun’s male plus-one would still prefer to function in Malay and English, as a result of his years in a Malay-medium Kebangsaan school setting, where most classmates, teachers and other non-academic staff (with the exception of the English Language period in your timetable) would function in Malay (given that Malay is the national language of Malaysia).

At another point in the conversation, Mekyun was asked if she usually laughs in that way - at home, triggering another round of roaring laughter from the Kelantanese-Hokkien content creator, influencer. In response, she explained that she has to be herself and honest in that particular situation, especially because she has to make her first date memorable, without anything too flashy, artificial and over-the-top.

As posted, the duo eventually reached their destination, a Kelantanese restaurant, or one that serves delights from the East Coast of Malaysia. While there are restaurants around across Malaysia that serve similar food, very few would dish them out to perfection. The reason they’re also rare is because of the distance between Klang Valley and Kelantan and Terengganu, which are on the East Coast of Malaysia.

The two of them, Mekyun and her partner, eventually had dinner, soaking in the spirit of Ramadan by joining the ‘buka puasa’ crowd, during which observers break their fast, after having fasted from dawn till around 7:30pm in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, which coincides with dinner time for Malaysians outside the Ramadan stretch.

Happy final day of Ramadan and Selamat Menyambut Syawal yang bakal tiba (for Saturday)!
