An influential figure in the media and political spheres, Rupert Murdoch is unravelled in the latest 2026 documentary Dynasty: The Murdochs. While engrossing and insightful, because of Murdoch’s attitude towards profiting, it really just shows the dark side about being powerful and wealthy.
The entire Murdoch family are well-known media magnates with roots in the UK and Australia, with some assets in the US. Rupert Murdoch’s father himself was a journalist and media proprietor. Upon Murdoch’s father’s death, it was a given that Rupert Murdoch was to take over from then onwards.
Like most audience members encountering Rupert Murdoch in such detail, excitement filled me. However, that all changed the minute the phone hacking scandal came into the picture along with how Murdoch and Murdoch’s four children handled the intense situation. Of course, who can forget the pie-throwing incident related to that when Murdoch had to face questions about it. There was more spectacle, but yet, my excitement just turned into something else entirely – confusion.
It's also strange because one minute, you see Rupert Murdoch disagreeing with Lachlan, Murdoch’s elder son, on how to run a television station. But later, Murdoch is the one to position Lachlan as the sole successor, resulting in him making amendments to an otherwise irrevocable family trust. Prior to the changes, Rupert Murdoch’s four children all had equal voting rights over the family business.
While it’s one thing that Murdoch, the American-Australian, has made a name for himself, it’s unfortunate that he had to resort to such measures and go to such lengths to run after what he truly wants – even if it means tearing his own family/children apart… and witnessing it himself.
Sources indicate that the media mogul has since retired in 2023, but still gives ideas from time to time.
