The Rubik’s Cube – the toy you either love or hate

In conjunction with the Rubik’s cube 50th anniversary in 2024, these are some fun facts about the mathematical invention.

  • Erno Rubik, the Hungarian professor of architecture behind this evergreen invention, struggled solving the Rubik’s cube himself. 
  • Initially built to teach Rubik’s students 3D geometry.
  • In 1985, it became the first toy to be played in space. 
  • There are online cube solvers as well as cube solver apps today. 
  • As Rubik’s cubes can jam up due to fast-solving, professional speedcubers use a special oil to keep them smooth and they spend much time oiling up these cubes before tournaments or competitions. 
  • There is a version of the Rubik’s cube meant for the visually-challenged.
  • Robots can solve it in about a second.
  • Originally called Magic Cube or"Bűvös Kocka".
  • There is a Netflix documentary on the colourful cube.
  • There’s a film on the Rubik’s Cube.
  • A retro version is created in light of the Rubik’s cube 50th anniversary. 
  • It is a toy that offers hands-on engagement and enhances a child’s cognitive ability, unlike many other toys.
  • The Rubik’s cube has influenced industries and aspects including the arts, accessories, architecture, and even popular culture.
