Break away from your daily routine and be sure to transport yourself to the World of Tim Burton, where the quirky and eccentric meet the ordinary and mundane. Lost after the exhibition? Fret not, it’s pretty normal. For those in creative pursuits, you will definitely find something worthy – whether they’re to do with idiosyncrasies or if something strikes a chord with you. While the event will be held until 30 July 2023, there is currently a promotion in conjunction with Mother’s Day valid until 22 May 2023. If you have enough credits and points on GrabPay, you might be able to get a little more discount.
While you’ll likely find yourself pacing up and down in circles in the mall, especially as you’re new, the backdrop placed by the organiser, just outside the entrance (somewhere around the Pink Zone of Level 2) serves as a good indicator that you’ve arrived at the venue. You’ll be impressed by the (pop-up museum) concept that the organiser had in mind and well executed.
Be in awe and tickled by different varieties of artworks and pieces that make film characters come alive. I was especially intrigued by the section on Corpse Bride, where they had arranged and displayed the film characters in rectangular, glass cases. In the section labelled Misunderstood Outcasts, you can tell it is a reflection of how Tim Burton felt, especially during his much younger days. Not only his human touch adds a certain dimension to all his creations, but also how he distorts characters and yet manages to produce the desired effect – something that very few artists can be successful at – you’re likely to be shocked at first but later laugh in acknowledgement of his creativity and cuteness.
A section on where the old and new come together can also be found at the exhibition. If you’re a tech geek, be sure to check this section out and get your dose of a blast from the past.
You’ll also find a chronology of Tim Burton’s life, past and present works of art, including other exhibitions. So, you can understand that he’s not only a director, but an artist in his own right.
Non-season pass holders can only wish they had more time to go over all the sections and ponder for a bit the characters and his other (lesser-known) and never-seen-before artwork.
The few aspects that I wish were better: the exhibition organisers could have thought of ways to encourage ticket holders to visit the merchandise section, even if you end up empty-handed. Some of the descriptions could have been placed in such a way that visitors to the exhibition need not bend down, for the sake of reading. Well, the venue’s flooring is uneven at certain carpeted spots, making it a hazard for those with movement and eyesight issues. So, you do want to be careful, as you are brought into the colourful and dizzying world of Tim Burton.
Tickets can be bought online via the organiser or the partnering ticketing platform, as well as onsite on the day of your visit. Alongside your ticket, OKU card holders will be requested to present their cards to the ones granting OR denying you entry into the site.
A separate masterclass was shifted to the Zoom platform and was held on 14 of April 2023, after Tim Burton caught COVID and had to postpone all in-person meets.
As at time of print, news sources have pointed towards a sequel to the 1988 film ‘Beetlejuice’, a horror-comedy film directed by Tim Burton. Apt don’t you think? And double (or triple the joy) for Tim Burton fans? While fans can expect to see both Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton reprise their roles, new faces include Jenna Ortega, who is of both Stuck in the Middle (2016-2018) (TV series) and Wednesday (Netflix series) (2022) fame.
*Any form of recording or photography while inside the exhibition is strictly prohibited.
*Exhibition duration: 10AM-10PM, with last admission at 9PM MYT.
