When I interviewed a member of the up-and-coming girlgroup Foxyrose, based in Indonesia’s Bandung, in September 2020, I realised that the K-pop scene in Indonesia was much bigger and more vibrant than what I initially had in mind. Separately, in late 2019, when one of my South Korean friends was on a business trip to Indonesia, she posted on Facebook saying that she happened to come across a song by (the K-pop group) BTS on Indonesian radio, which she found interesting. Then, yesterday, while on the streaming platform YouTube, I stumbled upon something else – what if K-pop idols were to sing Indonesian songs?
Have a go at Ryeowook’s take on Tiara Andini’s song Maafkan Aku #Terlanjur Mencinta https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxYicc91WzM . From the day it was posted on 1 March 2021, the cover video has garnered more than 1 million views! Ryeowook, as I found out, is an existing member of South Korean boygroup Super Junior. Tiara Andini’s song, which has also been covered in English by a Dutch singer, was initially launched in 2020. Tiara Andini, the runner-up of the 10th season of Indonesian Idol, has since commented on Ryeowook’s cover of her song. How neat.
Changha and Ari’s cover of the song, Cintanya Aku (2021), originally by Tiara Andini and Arsy Widianto, is so calming. You can listen to it over and over [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EV2l0Jzdjqo].
I think the most appropriate emoji (reaction) to this cover version of Cinta Luar Biasa (2019) is ????. Doyoung and Haechan of NCT, the super boygroup, consisting of 23 members and different subunits, tackle the original song, sung by Andmesh Kamaleng [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruGhshs4Us8].
