Watched: Love Never Dies

image

The starting scene of Love Never Dies looked promising, which was why I kept watching the show via the streaming service YouTube. Even then, disappointment set in the moment I saw the circus/burlesque scenes. It took me quite a while to connect to the story. Note that I’ve not heard or read The Phantom of Manhattan, which helped form the foundation for the stage musical.

However, I acknowledge that the creator wanted some form of closure to the story while providing you with an extension of The Phantom of the Opera.

Fortunately, the music is the saving grace – even if it may not be as powerful as the predecessor. The electric guitar bit surprised me since I was expecting acoustic-only instruments. The ending is also worth discussing.

First, I decided to watch in theatre mode (a feature on YouTube), before switching to full screen the second time.

The full show is about two hours. The version chosen for screening was the one that concerned the Australian cast/production in Melbourne.

If you’re curious about Love Never Dies, catch it before 2AM MYT Monday.

Until then, I’ll leave you with my favourite songs.
