When the light-hearted Apateu (APT.) by Rosé, Bruno Mars finds its way underwater

Acknowledging the benefits of using popular songs during a swimming lesson, some swimming schools (across the globe) would happily use/borrow popular tracks to teach the aquatic sports. For some kids and adults and even seniors alike, songs help put these learners at ease, in turn, raising their performance level, as they’ll be more relaxed. So, the idea of using a popular song in conducting swimming lessons isn’t entirely new.  Even then, I had a pleasant surprise and a good laugh when one of my current swimming coaches used the APT. movement in our lesson. “Where’s your APT. ? Ha. APT. APT.” Expressions of “Gosh, is he for real?” took over the lesson for a bit… until I realised its effectiveness and efficiency. Amazement eventually followed, but it actually works for when you want to turn around/switch direction in the swimming pool.

In this particular session, his aim was to train my arms and hands so I had a better grasp of these areas, should my other lower parts fail to work. Although at a later stage, he’d have to train both at the same time.

The APT. movement involves swaying your hands horizontally and rhythmically, doing so by swaying one of top of the other. To date, the K-Pop music video involving a collaboration between American-Filipino Bruno Mars and New Zealand-born Rosé of South Korean descent has garnered 844million views, since its release two months ago.

If you actually apply this movement when in the water, thanks to the buoyancy of water and some hand strength, you can turn around and switch direction. This is perhaps one of the ways to achieve a fuss-free lesson.

Needless to say, I’m enjoying my lessons to the maximum now, even if it’s just been about two months of working out in the water. More importantly, I’ve transformed from initially being extremely fearful of the water to someone who is now quite confident in the water. 8.5/10 – that’s how I’ll rate my water confidence level now – compared to zero outta 10 previously.

So, who said swimming lessons have to be oh-so-typical and boring?
