The song title and the lyrics are guaranteed to make you stop and think as they’re bound to make you feel like… “Wait a minute, did I hear them correctly?” That was me when I was a child when Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” would gain airplay on one of Malaysia’s English-language radio stations that used to play oldies and bring you as far back as the ‘50s.

News outlets have reported that Carly Simon now has Parkinson’s disease, other than a previous skin cancer diagnosis. This means, Simon has difficulty coordinating her muscles and with stability. One can only wonder if she can still play the piano like she used to. In “You’re So Vain” the piano is a central string instrument that brings listeners and fans a certain positive energy, even if the song is about three different men from her past relationships. Songs are usually flowery and have hidden meanings, but not for Carly Simon, who decided to be direct. Simon truly wanted to just sing about how narcissistic someone can be, ruining the healthy dynamics of a relationship.

Using Carly Simon’s skills, she created a sharp hook, upbeat rhythm and unforgettable chorus that’s easy to sing along to. The repeated bits in the lyrics make the song addictive to listen to and eat/drink with (although the objects used are meant to be taken as metaphors).

Carly Simon has in fact named actor Warren Beatty as the subject of the second verse. Beatty, who initially thought that the entire song was about him, has since responded with a thank you. However, Simon has chosen to conceal the identities of the other two men.

If it were to be played for today’s younger listeners, the song would still remain meaningful, as narcissism and vanity exists in many relationships where lots may just take the route of bearing the emotional weight that comes with sticking with unhealthy relationships where one partner would think highly of himself and therefore can do whatever he/she wants to do, behind the backs of their supposed only loyal partner.

Then there’s of course the whole paradox about the lyrics – if you think the song is about you, you’ll act out of vanity. However, if you don’t, the lyrics still discusses men from Simon’s past.

Students learning English will find this song useful, but must also have a B2 level of English language in order to grasp the metaphors, irony, tenses, and the adjective.

Carly Simon is the daughter of a well-known owner of a publishing company, Simon & Schuster. The elder Richard Leo Simon was active in 1921 until 1957, as he had suffered two heart attacks (and thus decided to retire), before finally dying of a third heart attack in 1960. Richard Leo Simon co-founded Simon & Schuster with Max Schuster, whom he met while working as a piano salesman, before turning to publishing.

Carly Simon is the only surviving sibling left; all her other three siblings, including one brother, have passed on. Carly Simon’s sisters, Joanna and Lucy, died one day apart in October 2022. Meanwhile, Carly Simon’s only brother, a former photographer, died in 2018.
