In view of the Hari Raya celebrations that commenced last Saturday for Malaysia and a few neighbours, it’s not uncommon for celebrants to lighten the mood by singing and bringing joy during the festive season. As reported in the local Singaporean media a number of days ago, Hady Mirza, a Singaporean R & B singer, visited a secondary school in Singapore, where he was visibly in awe of a student’s impromptu singing of Suasana Hari Raya. From the snippet shown, it appears that a teacher had recorded the short performance. This captured the media’s attention across the region, as the student has low vision. However, despite her challenges, she sang beautifully – her classmates, smiling in glee, responded by giving her a well-deserved applause. The student was able to make herself understood, after she was done singing.
Hady Mirza, who won the second season of Singapore Idol, was visiting the school to show his appreciation, as the teachers of the school had done their own performance video of his latest Raya song “Sekejap Dah Raya” this 2026. “Sekejap Dah Raya” is an upbeat and playful song and would speak to those who are unserious about Raya prep. Hady Mirza also won the inaugural season of Asian Idol held in Jakarta, Indonesia.
“Suasana Hari Raya” (1985) is a popular classic, originally sung by Anuar Zain and Ellina Razak. Anuar Zain is related to both Ziana Zain and Ernie Zakri, well-known in the music industry. Ellina Razak is a pop singer and started singing in the 1980s, though it is said that she had stepped away from the spotlight for a certain period, before deciding to quit entirely from all the attention (that comes with being in the public eye) to focus on her own family. She has contributed to the Malaysian International Dance Organisation.
