China: Showing the world the way to artificial intelligence (AI)
Much has been said about artificial intelligence (AI), intelligence of machines. An increasing number of restaurants and other places in Malaysia are now adopting robots, which is one of the ways artificial intelligence is applied to the real world. Chatting with an acquaintance from China who has worked and studied in Malaysia, these are a few applications of artificial intelligence in China.
- Smart home devices: There are some new hotels which combine TV, lights, curtains together by using a smart device (e.g. Xiaoai, Tmall Genie). These smart speakers, which are voice-friendly, allow users to simplify turning on the light, TV, or even playing music. Convenience is the contributing factor to why it is popular in daily life.
- Facial recognition technology: This technology is rapidly developing in every domain of our work and life. When we take public transport, go shopping, check in/check out for work, we can use our face directly.
- AI robots: Besides the presence and usage of robot waiters in some restaurants in China, there are AI robots at the bank, if we have to be physically present to get something done at the bank. These AI robots would be able to guide customers and provide solutions in a timely manner. In Malaysia, when I was at the bank, it would normally take me hours to solve any issue.
The reasons why China uses Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- It is the trend, just like how electricity, the PC, the telephone were thought of and invented.
- The country that is leading the way in AI is also the lead in the world. As China is developing quickly, AI is also the main part of our country. The Chinese government provides funding and supports research into this area.
- Convenience and efficiency: Improvement in our life quality with increasing automation and recommendations. We could also just use our smartphone for almost anything.
- Aging population: This is a serious issue that China will have to face, especially in the years to come. AI can, for instance, help lighten the burden of caregivers and those who are being cared for.
Ultimately, just like any other invention, humans are all behind Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI can surely help in some areas and improve our daily and work life in ways that many of us once thought were impossible.
