Malaysian comedian borrows popular song by Indonesian rock band, in line with their upcoming Malaysian concert, to also promote his Jakarta show

Fans of Douglas Lim, guess what? He’s back with one of his brilliant but also bodoh jokes (on his YouTube channel). Those of you in Jakarta, he’s slated to perform at The American Club.

12 July 2025 is the date of his show, which is also his first in the capital city of Indonesia.

In his comedy video, Lim makes use of a song by Indonesian alternative rock band, Sheila On 7, which adds a certain weight and brings a sense of nostalgia to fans of the band who can listen to the same song over and over again.

Naturally, because Lim is of Chinese descent, he stereotypes and makes fun of the Chinese community – not sure how the products of SJKC are going to feel about it. Hopefully, there won’t be too much hate.

Intelligently, Lim borrows the lyrics of Sephia and some elements of the English language (being formerly an English language teacher), and the naming system of the ethnic Chinese in Malaysia to make his audience/fans laugh. He also acknowledges his heritage by using some Cantonese expressions, which are oh-so-typical and relatable.

Lim cleverly blends and connects the two to promote his comedy show in Jakarta.

Here’s to hoping there’ll be no tiff between the fans of Douglas Lim and Sheila On 7. Keeping my fingers crossed.

There are three tiers of tickets for Lim’s show, namely Diamond, Gold, Silver.

Sheila On 7 will be holding their concert on 26 July 2025 at Bukit Jalil Indoor Stadium, an upgrade from Sunway Lagoon, as initially thought of.

This will be their first show after the band’s seven-year hiatus.

Sheila On 7 has had a number of changes to their member lineup over the years, since their debut in the 90s, when their songs were immensely popular on Malaysian radio waves, as there is some proximity in terms of the language and culture (although not entirely due to the Dutch influence) between Malaysia and Indonesia.

Sheila On 7 makes songs that are addictive, relatable, upbeat and usually optimistic, making them connect with pre-teens, teens, and young adults. The band’s achievements include being the only Indonesian band to sell over one million copies of their physical albums, three in a row, namely their debut album, Sheila On 7, Kisah Klasik Untuk Masa Depan, and 07 Des.

Sheila On 7 is slated to perform as part of their Latihan Pestapora, a series of pre-events before the actual major music festival that will showcase a combination of Malaysian and Indonesian musicians, bands, and performers. Brought to Malaysia for the first time this 2025, it is an effort to revive the music industry after many of these professionals were affected by the pandemic that saw the entire world scrambling and making adjustments to their lives and day-to-day activities.

NOTES:

SJKC is to denote national type primary schools, in which the medium of instruction is Chinese. This is different compared to the SK and SMK system where these schools use Malay as the medium of instruction, as it is the national language of Malaysia.

Bodoh means silly, stupid, or dimwitted.

The band chose the name Sheila as it refers to the name of the band members’ female friend, a short form of Sheilagank, which eventually stuck with their fans. “On 7” is a reference to the seven-note solfege, in music theory.
